UNACCUSTOMED SPIRITS

Spend a snowbound Christmas in an Elizabethan mansion, amid a wicked and witty assortment of people musicians, eccentrics, aristocrats, artists, and a pair of bickering ghosts with a taste for eavesdropping and Star Trek.

Struck down by shingles, Cleo Byng postpones her wedding and heads north to recuperate at her infuriating Cousin Henry’s house in the wintry Eyotshire village of Hazard. She’s not sure what to expect, and Haphazard House turns out to be a dilapidated Elizabethan pile with few amenities and a doom-laden housekeeper, not to mention a strange pair who have been in residence for rather more than the usual life span and have a keen interest in modern technology.
Any remaining hopes of a peaceful and uneventful convalescence for Cleo are dashed when she receives an urgent summons to travel abroad and rescue an old friend from the grip of the Hungarian secret police.
Then, safely back in England, a crowd of welcome—and less welcome —friends, relatives and connections descend on Haphazard House for what could be its last ever Christmas before the demolition that threatens both it and its long-standing residents.

Can Cleo make Henry appreciate its charms—and hers?

An enchanting and witty tale of marriage, misalliance and misunderstanding.

Escape into another world and delight in the lives of a host of fascinating characters. This is the England of Wodehouse and Downton Abbey, where wickedness and scandal lurk beneath the superb self-confidence of the upper classes.

Bestseller Elizabeth Aston’s six Mountjoy books were originally written under the name Elizabeth Pewsey and published by Sceptre, an imprint of Hodder Headline.

‘Wickedly amusing…Like good wine, very addictive. Strongly recommended.’
The Good Book Guide

UNACCUSTOMED SPIRITS An English comedy The Mountjoys Book 5 edition by Elizabeth Aston Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Kind of a long story but I want to explain why I expected to like this book and was so disappointed. “Elizabeth Aston” is one of the pen names for author Elizabeth Edmondson. I discovered Edmondson while looking for books that might be picks for ’s First program. Trying to guess upcoming picks is a puzzle I like to play with in spare moments. What can I say- I’m easily amused and is constant source of free amusement ) The only candidate I found that looked interesting was Edmondson’s “A Man of Some Repute”. The story line looked interesting and I really liked the “Look Inside” sample. While looking at Edmonson’s other books “Unaccustomed Spirits” looked like the perfect book for right now- just something light to read a few pages at night. I wasn’t expecting high art or anything. Sadly, it was almost unreadable.

Unfortunately, the author really struggled with the whole concept of transitions. Throughout the book, there are sudden unexplained scene shifts that are very confusing. Between one sentence and the next characters appear and disappear, hours and even days have passed. Scenes and conversations just end abruptly, usually with no resolution or subtlety. (Including the last scene in the book for heaven’s sake.) In addition, it appears that most characters are mind readers. It will appear that one character is just thinking something but then another character will respond as if it was said out loud. This abrupt, disjointed style is confusing and made reading the book a chore rather than a pleasant diversion. Rather than give a dozen examples, I’ll try to make my highlights public. If it works they may show up below the reviews and people can judge for themselves.

If there was a deeper story here beyond what is given in the book overview, I missed it while trying to figure out what the heck was happening. The outcome was very predictable and definitely not worth the effort it took to read.

Although this shows a kindle publication date of 2013, it was actually published in the UK in 1998 so I am hoping that these problems have been resolved with experience- and good editors. But they should have been addressed before releasing it on kindle. This is shown as “Book 5” of the series (evidently just loosely interconnecting characters) but I won’t have any problem skipping the first four.

If “A Man of Some Repute” is a kindle first pick, it will be free so I will probably get it- nothing else looks interesting. (For the record I think the four picks will be Edmonson’s book, “Letters to Zell”, “The Perfect Son” and “Darkness Brutal”. I’ve never had more than two right in the past- we’ll see ) ) But I certainly won’t be spending money on her earlier works.
Edit to add Well my books were picked for UK but not US. I guess I’ll never know if the author improved with time )
This series is extremely well done. The books follow the lives of characters in one very large family, the Mountjoys, and their friends. The books can be read separately, they stand well on their own, but it's much better if you read them in sequence since they're part of a larger continuing story. It really feels like one very long novel with lots of interesting characters. All the characters are well-developed and complex. The plots are about important life issues choosing a career that makes you happy, finding the right person to marry, dealing with unpleasant folks. So these aren't thrillers, but they are very worth the time spent to read them. The only suggestion I would make is to read this book, Unaccustomed Spirits, last, and Brotherly Love next to last, if you're reading them in order. Unaccustomed Spirits completes the story and ties up all the loose ends from the previous books.
they keep startling me
This book is sheer fun, no big worries, full of pleasant (mostly) people. The ghosts are priceless. It's the perfect book for vacations.
This was just not up to the quality of the other books. I have already purchase the 6th book in the series, so I will read it, but it I hope it is better than this one.
As stated before, I love and have read all of these Mountjoy books and am so sad that there will not be any more. This one takes the prize for the two most entertaining and unusual ghostly characters since The Canterbury Ghost - a nice little twist to the saga of this zany and unconventional family. The death of this author is a great loss - I have read all of her books both as Aston and Edmondson and loved each of them.
Aston's prose is top notch, especially the descriptive passages.. Some of the subject matter in book 5 seems a bit forced to me but gently so. Her characters (including the ghosts) are less convincing than they might be. Most interesting character is the child. The S&M content is merely suggestive, and hardly qualifies as sexual. What violence there is amounts to little more than things that go bump in the night. Readers expecting to be shocked/scared can pass on this. For descriptive detail of the countryside (UK and Italy), hard to beat Aston.
